How long is a WorkSafeBC asbestos certificate valid?
WorkSafeBC asbestos certificates are valid for three years from
the date of issue. Workers should plan ahead and complete their
renewal before the certificate expires whenever possible.
My certificate has already expired. Can I still renew by exam?
Yes, provided no more than 12 months have passed since the
certificate expired. During that period, WorkSafeBC allows the
worker to renew by retaking and passing the appropriate
certification exam without normally having to repeat the full
training program. Additional training may still be required if
the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation or applicable
asbestos safe work practices have changed.
What happens after the 12-month post-expiry period?
If more than 12 months have passed since the certificate expired,
the worker must retake the applicable full training program and
pass the appropriate certification exam to become certified
again.
Can I continue asbestos abatement work while my certificate is expired?
No. An expired certificate is no longer valid. The Occupational
Health and Safety Regulation requires a person carrying out
asbestos abatement work to hold a valid asbestos certificate for
the type of work being performed. Employers must also ensure
workers hold the required valid certificate before permitting
them to perform asbestos abatement work.
Do I need to renew every asbestos certification level I hold?
You do not separately renew lower prerequisite levels. A Level 3
holder does not also need to renew Level 2 and Level 1. A Level 2
holder does not also need to renew Level 1. A Level S holder does
not also need to renew Level 1. If you hold certificates covering
separate scopes of practice, contact us and we can help determine
which renewal examinations are appropriate.
What is the passing grade for the WorkSafeBC certification exam?
The minimum passing grade is 80%. The Level 1 exam contains
15 multiple-choice questions and requires at least 12 correct
answers. Level 2, Level 3, and Level S examinations contain
20 multiple-choice questions and require at least 16 correct
answers.
Is the renewal exam open book?
Yes. WorkSafeBC certification examinations are open book and
workers may reference approved course or study materials while
writing. The examination must still be completed independently.
Internet searching, assistance from another person, and other
unauthorized assistance are not permitted during the exam.
Can I complete the renewal exam remotely?
Yes. 1 Asbestos Academy offers live remote examination
appointments. The worker joins the invigilator by video
conference while completing the WorkSafeBC online examination.
Remote examinations are actively invigilated and are not
unsupervised or on-demand tests.
Do I need to repeat the Level 2 practical skills test when I recertify?
For an eligible renewal, WorkSafeBC describes recertification as
retaking and passing the appropriate certification exam. The full
Level 2 training program and practical assessment are not normally
repeated for exam-only renewal. If more than 12 months have passed
since expiry, the full applicable training pathway must be completed
again.
What identification do I need for the exam?
Workers must be prepared to show valid government-issued photo
identification before the examination begins. If valid
identification cannot be produced, the exam cannot proceed and
must be rescheduled.
What happens if I do not pass the exam?
A worker who scores below 80% may rewrite the examination.
WorkSafeBC's examination administration guidance requires a
minimum 24-hour cooldown period between attempts. A rewrite is
scheduled as a separate examination appointment.
My original training was with another approved provider. Can I renew through 1 Asbestos Academy?
Yes, if you are otherwise eligible for exam-only renewal. WorkSafeBC
requires renewal by retaking and passing the appropriate exam through
an approved training provider. You do not have to return to the same
provider that delivered your original training. If your certificate
or renewal eligibility is unclear, contact us before booking.
When will I know whether I passed, and where can I view my renewed certificate?
Candidates completing the WorkSafeBC online examination receive
their examination result when the exam is submitted. WorkSafeBC
is responsible for issuing the renewed certificate. Certificate
holders can use WorkSafeBC online services and the My certificates
area to view and manage their asbestos certificates.
