Frequently asked questions

Common questions about recertification.

Still not sure where your workers stand? Call us at 250-589-7233.

How do I know when my workers' certificates expire? +
The expiry date is printed on the WorkSafeBC certificate card. Certificates issued after January 1, 2024 are valid for 3 years from the date of issue. If you are not sure, check the physical card or contact WorkSafeBC directly. If you know roughly when your workers completed training, you can calculate the expiry from there.
Does a Level 2 worker need to renew Level 1 separately? +
No. WorkSafeBC requires workers to renew only at their highest certification level. A worker certified at Level 2 renews with a Level 2 exam and does not need a separate Level 1 renewal.
What happens if a worker misses the 12-month window? +
Once the 12-month post-expiry window closes, the worker must retake the full certification course. They cannot recertify by exam alone. That means paying full course rates and taking the full course days, rather than sitting an exam for $99.95. It is worth checking expiry dates now to avoid this.
Can a worker do an abatement job with an expired certificate? +
No. Workers must hold a valid WorkSafeBC asbestos certification to perform abatement work legally in BC. An expired certificate does not permit work. Contractors can also face compliance action if uncertified workers are on a regulated worksite.
My workers were trained by a different provider. Can they write the exam with you? +
Yes. Workers who completed their training with any WorkSafeBC approved provider can write the WorkSafeBC certification exam through 1 Asbestos Academy. The standalone exam fee for workers trained elsewhere is $149.99 + GST per worker.
How quickly can we book? +
Exam bookings require a minimum of 1 day notice. Rush next-day bookings are available subject to availability. We run exams 7 days a week, so in most cases we can get your workers scheduled quickly. Contact us if you have a tight deadline.
When does the renewed certificate get issued? +
Temporary digital certificates are typically available within 48 hours (2 business days) of passing the exam. Physical certificates are mailed within 30 days.
What if a worker fails the exam? +
A failed attempt does not reset the 12-month window. Workers who do not pass can rewrite the exam for $99.99 + GST. Contact us to book a rewrite. We recommend workers review the relevant study materials before sitting the exam.

Don't let the 12-month window close.
