Who this course is for

Level 1 is for workers who work near asbestos, not on it.

If a worker may encounter asbestos-containing materials but does not perform abatement work, Level 1 is the required certification under WorkSafeBC regulations.

Level 1 is right for you if you

  • Transport or dispose of asbestos-containing waste materials
  • Work near asbestos-containing materials but not directly with them
  • Supervise workers in low-risk asbestos environments
  • Need foundational awareness for general compliance purposes
  • Are completing awareness training as part of an onboarding program

Level 1 is not enough if you

  • Perform hands-on asbestos removal or abatement work
  • Set up or dismantle containment areas
  • Handle or disturb asbestos-containing materials directly
  • Work directly with asbestos-containing materials during abatement or removal
  • Are required to hold a Level 2 certificate by your employer or a project
Not sure which level you need? Call us at 250-589-7233 and we will confirm the right course for your role and worksite.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

What does Level 1 certify me to do? +
Level 1: Foundational Awareness certifies workers to transport and dispose of asbestos-containing waste materials and to work under supervision on low-risk tasks where asbestos may be present. It does not certify workers to perform asbestos abatement or removal work. That requires Level 2.
Do I need Level 1 before taking Level 2? +
Not as a separate booking. The Level 1 + 2 Combined course covers both levels of training in sequence. By completing the combined course and passing the Level 2 WorkSafeBC exam, WorkSafeBC issues you a Level 2 certificate directly, which covers the Level 1 foundational awareness competencies. If you book Level 1 on its own now and want Level 2 later, you would pay for both separately. The combined course is the better value if there is any chance you will need Level 2.
When will I receive my certificate? +
Exam results are displayed immediately after submission. WorkSafeBC processes certification records and issues your certificate directly. Temporary digital certificates are typically available within 48 hours (2 business days). Physical certificates are mailed within 30 days.
What if I fail the exam? +
Workers who do not achieve 80% may book an exam rewrite. Rewrite fees apply and are separate from the original course fee. Contact us to arrange a rewrite booking.
How long is the Level 1 certificate valid? +
WorkSafeBC asbestos certificates are valid for three years. Recertification by exam is available within 12 months of expiry for $99.95. Workers who wait beyond 12 months after expiry must retake the full course.
Can my employer book for a large group? +
Yes. Level 1 accommodates up to 30 participants per session, making it ideal for employer-wide awareness training. Private bookings are available for employers who want exclusive sessions for their team. Contact us or submit an intake request.
Can you come to our site to deliver training? +
Yes. Onsite training is available anywhere in British Columbia. Travel costs are built into the quote. Contact us directly for a custom travel training quote.
