WorkSafeBC exam
WorkSafeBC Foundational Awareness certification exam administered by 1 Asbestos Academy. Open book, multiple choice, 80% to pass.
Exam results submitted
We submit your results to WorkSafeBC Certification Services. Your certificate is issued directly by WorkSafeBC once processed.
Up to 30 participants
Level 1 accommodates up to 30 workers per session. Contact us about private training arrangements for larger crews.
Level 1 is for workers who work near asbestos, not on it.
If a worker may encounter asbestos-containing materials but does not perform abatement work, Level 1 is the required certification under WorkSafeBC regulations.
Level 1 is right for you if you
- Transport or dispose of asbestos-containing waste materials
- Work near asbestos-containing materials but not directly with them
- Would benefit from general asbestos safety knowledge but are not performing asbestos abatement work
- Need foundational awareness for general compliance purposes
- Are completing awareness training as part of an onboarding program
Level 1 is not enough if you
- Perform hands-on asbestos removal or abatement work
- Set up or dismantle containment areas
- Handle or disturb asbestos-containing materials directly
- Work directly with asbestos-containing materials during abatement or removal
- Are required to hold a Level 2 certificate by your employer or a project

Level 1 is delivered as a single-day in-person session. Theory and exam are completed the same day.

What asbestos is, where it is found, how exposure occurs, and what the long-term health consequences are for workers and the public.
Regulatory requirements
WorkSafeBC requirements for workers who may encounter asbestos, including transport, disposal, and low-risk task regulations under the OHSR.

Basic PPE requirements, hazard identification, how to work safely near asbestos-containing materials, and when to stop work and report.
WorkSafeBC exam
After completing the in-person Level 1 course, candidates write the separate WorkSafeBC online certification exam administered by 1 Asbestos Academy. Open book, multiple choice, 80% passing grade. Results displayed immediately on submission.

Level 1 is a classroom and exam session only. No PPE or safety gear is required.
Required
- ✓ Valid government-issued photo ID. Driver's Licence, Passport, or BC Services Card. Workers without valid ID may not be permitted to write the exam.
- ✓ For the separate online certification exam, a laptop or desktop computer with a working webcam and stable internet connection is strongly recommended. Cell phones are not permitted.
- ✓ Course manual (provided and included in your course fee).
No PPE required
Level 1 is a classroom course. No steel-toed boots, respirator, or Tyvek suit are needed. If you plan to continue to Level 2 at a later date, those items will be required for the Level 2 practical assessment.
Optional safety gear (masks, filters, Tyvek suits, gloves) is available for purchase through 1 Asbestos Academy if needed.
What to expect on exam day.
The Level 1 WorkSafeBC exam is administered by 1 Asbestos Academy as part of the single-day session.

Level 1 + 2 Combined Asbestos Training
Two-day in-person program. Level 1 and Level 2 theory covered on Day 1. Level 2 practical assessment and WorkSafeBC written exam on Day 2. One booking, Level 2 certified.

No refund policy
All course registrations and examination bookings are non-refundable. This applies to missed classes, late arrivals, scheduling conflicts, and failure to meet ID requirements.
Rescheduling
At our sole discretion, participants unable to attend may be issued a training credit or seat transfer to a future available date. Credits hold no cash value and are non-transferable.
Private and group bookings
All private and group training dates are non-refundable. Reserved training dates may not be cancelled without operational consequence.
Cancellation by 1 Asbestos Academy
We reserve the right to reschedule or cancel training due to insufficient enrollment, instructor illness, or operational requirements. Participants will be offered a transfer or training credit, or a refund where required by applicable law.
