You need Level 1 + 2 certification.
Anyone performing hands-on asbestos abatement work in BC must hold Level 2 certification. Level 1 is a prerequisite, so most workers complete the combined course in a single two-day booking. If you only transport or dispose of asbestos material without performing abatement, Level 1 alone is sufficient.
Level 1 is the right starting point.
WorkSafeBC recommends Level 1 training for electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors, flooring contractors, and other trades workers who may encounter asbestos-containing materials on the job. Level 1 gives you the awareness and safe work practices you need without requiring full abatement certification. If your work involves actually removing or disturbing asbestos material, you will need Level 2 as well.
You need certification. Licensing depends on your situation.
As of January 1, 2024, any person doing asbestos abatement work in BC must be certified. As an independent operator, the level you need depends on the work you perform. If you are working for others and want to access licensed contractor work, you may also choose to apply for a WorkSafeBC abatement licence.
Your workers need certification. Your company needs a licence.
As of January 1, 2024, any employer conducting asbestos abatement work for others must hold a WorkSafeBC abatement licence, and all workers performing abatement must be certified. Workers doing hands-on abatement need Level 2. Your company must have at least one Level 3 certified supervisor on staff to qualify for a licence.
Level 1 is the right starting point.
Our courses are open to everyone including homeowners. Level 1 gives you the awareness, hazard recognition, and safe handling knowledge you need before starting a renovation in a home that may contain asbestos. Homes built before the mid-1980s are the most common concern. If you are planning to do more involved removal work, Level 2 covers the full abatement skill set. A homeowner-specific course is in development. Contact us to be notified when it is available.
You need Level S certification.
Level S is the certification required for anyone conducting asbestos surveys in BC. This includes identifying asbestos-containing materials, collecting bulk samples, and producing asbestos survey reports. Environmental consultants, property inspectors, industrial hygienists, and contractors offering survey services all typically need Level S. The only prerequisite is a valid Level 1 certificate. Level 2 is not required for surveyors.
Core abatement certification.
Level 1 and Level 2 cover the full scope of abatement work. Most workers take both in a single combined booking.
Asbestos Aware
For workers who transport or dispose of asbestos-containing materials, or who work in a supervised low-risk role. Covers recognition, hazard awareness, and safe handling practices.
Asbestos Safety
Two-day combined program. The most efficient path to full abatement certification. Covers foundational awareness through to high-risk abatement work, containment, PPE, and decontamination.
Complete Certification Package
All four levels in one booking. Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 pathway, and Level S pathway. Everything you need to go from first certification to safety leader and surveyor. Level 1+2 are completed in person, while Level 3 and S are completed online through an authorized training provider. All examinations will be administered by 1 Asbestos Academy with a 7-day a week availability.
Supervision and surveyor pathways.
Required for supervisors and asbestos surveyors. Training is delivered by a WorkSafeBC approved third-party provider. We coordinate the pathway and administer your exam.
Supervisor Certification
For supervisors responsible for planning and overseeing asbestos abatement worksites. Required for anyone managing crew health and safety on an abatement site. Prerequisite: valid Level 2.
Surveyor Certification
For workers who identify, sample, and document asbestos-containing materials. Required for conducting formal asbestos surveys in BC. Prerequisite: valid Level 1 only.
