Abatement Worker

You need Level 1 + 2 certification.

Anyone performing hands-on asbestos abatement work in BC must hold Level 2 certification. Level 1 is a prerequisite, so most workers complete the combined course in a single two-day booking. If you only transport or dispose of asbestos material without performing abatement, Level 1 alone is sufficient.

Trades Worker

Level 1 is the right starting point.

WorkSafeBC recommends Level 1 training for electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors, flooring contractors, and other trades workers who may encounter asbestos-containing materials on the job. Level 1 gives you the awareness and safe work practices you need without requiring full abatement certification. If your work involves actually removing or disturbing asbestos material, you will need Level 2 as well.

Independent Operator

You need certification. Licensing depends on your situation.

As of January 1, 2024, any person doing asbestos abatement work in BC must be certified. As an independent operator, the level you need depends on the work you perform. If you are working for others and want to access licensed contractor work, you may also choose to apply for a WorkSafeBC abatement licence.

Licensing note: Independent operators who perform abatement may require a WorkSafeBC Asbestos Abatement Licence (AAL). For licensing details, visit WorkSafeBC .

Employer / Contractor

Abatement employers need a licence. Workers need the right certification.

As of January 1, 2024, employers that offer or carry out asbestos abatement work for others in relation to buildings must hold a valid WorkSafeBC Asbestos Abatement Licence. Anyone performing asbestos abatement work in relation to a building must hold the certificate appropriate to the work they perform.

Employer responsibility: Before permitting asbestos abatement work, the employer must ensure each person is competent and holds the valid certificate required for that work, and must record the certificate details. Level 1 covers transport and disposal of asbestos-containing material or waste; Level 2 covers performing abatement work; Level 3 covers planning, overseeing, and managing asbestos abatement sites. For licensing details, visit WorkSafeBC .

Homeowner

Level 1 is the right starting point.

Our courses are open to everyone including homeowners. Level 1 gives you the awareness, hazard recognition, and safe handling knowledge you need before starting a renovation in a home that may contain asbestos. Homes built before the mid-1980s are the most common concern. If you are planning to do more involved removal work, Level 2 covers the full abatement skill set. A homeowner-specific course is in development. Contact us to be notified when it is available.

Asbestos Surveyor

You need Level S certification.

Level S is the certification required for anyone conducting asbestos surveys in BC. This includes identifying asbestos-containing materials, collecting bulk samples, and producing asbestos survey reports. Environmental consultants, property inspectors, industrial hygienists, and contractors offering survey services all typically need Level S. The only prerequisite is a valid Level 1 certificate. Level 2 is not required for surveyors.
