Silica Safety for
Concrete Cutting Workers

Competency-based training for workers who cut, grind, drill, core, chip, saw, or otherwise disturb concrete and other silica-containing materials. Learn how to recognize respirable crystalline silica hazards, apply the required controls, identify failures, and complete the work safely.

Who should attend

Built for workers who create or work near silica dust.

This course is designed for construction, concrete, restoration, demolition, maintenance, and similar workers whose tasks may generate respirable crystalline silica dust.

Concrete cutting crews

Workers operating handheld or walk-behind saws and assisting with cutting operations.

How dust enters the body, silicosis, cancer risk, exposure limits, and ALARA.

Risk assessments, exposure control plans, air monitoring, records, and employer-worker duties.

Hierarchy of controls, water delivery, source capture, HEPA systems, PPE, hygiene, cleanup, slurry, and waste.

Worker responsibilities

Pre-use checks, following the ECP and safe work procedure, identifying failures, reporting problems, and exercising stop-work rights.

Plan a safe concrete cut before, during, and after the task using realistic equipment and control scenarios.

Successful participants receive a Silica Safety for Concrete Cutting Workers Certificate of Completion issued by 1 Asbestos Academy after meeting the course requirements.
How does this course support my employer's exposure control plan?
The course helps workers understand silica hazards, control measures, equipment checks, failure recognition, housekeeping, respiratory protection, and stop-work decisions so they can better follow the employer's site-specific exposure control plan and safe work procedures.
Does the course include respirator fit testing?
No. Respiratory protection fundamentals are covered, but any required fit test must be completed separately using the worker’s assigned respirator.
Can this be delivered for a private company group?
Yes. Private group delivery can be arranged in Victoria, Surrey, or at suitable client locations across British Columbia.
